Cupcake Pin Cushion

44/365 Cupcake Pin Cushion

I’ve been through a faze of making items using food as inspiration, including biscuit cushions, keyrings and notebooks, plus handcrafted cupcake pin cushions. As well as using a ceramic ramekin for the base gives the pin cushion a bit of weight to hold down fabric you are pinning ready to stitch, I have used a microkiln and made my own raku pottery ramekins using a special ‘paper-based’ clay which hardens to a white colour and doesn’t need firing at such a high temperature. The raku works well in the summer, when the items can be placed in a metal container containing shredded newspaper and as the newspaper catches alight (because the clay is hot from the microkiln) you position the lid over the top and gain varying results with raku glazes.
